Russia Launches Deadly Drone Strike on Ukraine’s Dnipro, Killing 13, Zelenskyy Demands Sanctions
A Russian drone attack on Ukraine's Dnipro railway station has killed 13 people and injured more than 10. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the strike and demanded tougher sanctions from the EU, US and G7.
Describing the incident as a horrific attack, Zelenskyy said Russian forces had targeted the railway station platform where the two passenger trains were stationed.
"Russia carried out a horrific attack on the railway station in Dnipro. The Russians struck the platform with drones, where an ordinary local train and a regular passenger train were standing," he said.
Zelenskyy confirmed that 13 people had been killed in the attack, while 10 others sustained injuries. Expressing condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, he said, "Unfortunately, 13 deaths have been confirmed so far. I extend my condolences to their families and loved ones. Ten other people have been injured. All necessary emergency services are working at the scene."
Zelenskyy Calls for Tougher Sanctions Against Russia
Following the attack, Zelenskyy criticised Russia for continuing its strikes against Ukrainian civilians instead of taking steps to reduce tensions. He questioned how many terrorist attacks Russia had carried out against Ukrainians since sanctions on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector were lifted.
"Instead of reducing tensions, how many terrorist attacks has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions on some Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector were lifted? This is why Ukraine has consistently maintained that the United States and Europe must take appropriate and decisive measures in response to Russian aggression," Zelenskyy said.
He further stressed that sanctions imposed on Moscow and its war machinery should not be eased as long as the war continues.
"As long as this Russian war continues, there must be no easing of sanctions against Moscow and its war machine. The time has come for the EU, the United States and the G7 to introduce new and tougher sanctions. I thank everyone who is ready to help in this way," he added.
The deadly drone strike on Dnipro's railway station has renewed Ukraine's demand for stronger international action against Russia, with Zelenskyy urging Western governments to maintain economic pressure on Moscow and introduce additional sanctions.
A horrific Russian strike on the railway station in Dnipro. The Russians launched a drone attack on a platform where an ordinary commuter train and a scheduled passenger train were standing. Unfortunately, 13 people have been confirmed killed as of now. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Ten more people were injured. All necessary emergency services are working at the scene. Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating? This is precisely why Ukraine has always said that just and decisive action by America and Europe is needed in response to Russian escalation – sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased for as long as this Russian war continues. It is time for new, stronger sanctions steps by the EU, the United States, and the G7. I thank everyone who is ready to help in this way.
